Physical Preparation

The Bright Angel Trail is a rewarding, but challenging hike. The best way to get ready is to train! Remember that your hike is 8 miles (and mandatory!) with an elevation gain or loss of 4,400 ft.

People often underestimate the basic physical aspects of a river trip and the amount of training they’ll need to prepare for this hike. We are excited to announce that we are working with Jeff Schmelzle, a professional strength and conditioning specialist from HYPO2 in Flagstaff, AZ to offer a customized training program for our guests.

Download the Hike Training program below, and begin this training program 8-12 weeks before your trip so that you have enough time to complete the program.

This is a 6-week training program at a minimum, but you may find that an additional 2-3 weeks is necessary to maximize your results and your recovery between training sessions.

Here is how to get started!

Training program•Download the Grand Canyon Hike Training program! This packet can give you the direction you need to succeed on your hike into or out of the canyon.

•Ask your local gym if they have training options. Some guests have hired a personal trainer to help them stay motivated and on track.

•An additional resource is Fit For Trips. Marcus can create a custom plan for your hike as well.

Consult your physician prior to beginning this program to make sure you are healthy enough for strength and cardiovascular exercise! Complete this program at your own risk.

No question too small!
