Where to Get Your River Gear

By Nick • October 22, 2025

When it comes to outfitting any outdoor pursuit, it’s very easy to get overwhelmed with all the options and, quite frankly, the price tag! Whether it be hiking, hunting, cycling, climbing, or watersports, every outdoor activity seems to have its own niche assortment of gear—and where to buy it all.

Outdoor gear prices vary wildly. Ask any river guide, and they will tell you that you get what you pay for, especially when you are trying to keep water out of your world. While shopping, keep in mind the concept of cost vs. value. It’s easy to look at the price of an item and think that it just costs too much for the use you may or may not get out of it. But how much will you value a sandal whose tread won’t separate from the sole after a few side hikes? How much will you value a rain jacket whose seams won’t rip out on day 1 of a week-long river trip? That’s not to say you must break the bank to outfit your river trip. There are plenty of deals to be had, especially if you start shopping early and put in the time to find what’s right for you.

This blog isn’t about the specifics on what to get – we’ll leave that to our packing lists – but where to get it all. There are many retailers, both online and brick-and-mortar stores, where you can purchase gear. Depending on what level of performance you are looking for, you’ll want to choose your store wisely. The following retailers are separated into general likelihood of finding certain performance levels. See which statement best describes your intentions and go from there (Pro tip: consider shopping holiday sales for your river trip next year!):

“I just need the basics to get by on this one trip and will never use my gear again.”

Walmart
Target
Dick’s Sporting Goods
REI Outlet

“This is cool! I’m new to outdoor adventure travel, so I don’t want to spend a lot quite yet. But I hope to do more and want some reliable gear!”

REI
Dick’s Sporting Goods
Sportsmen’s Warehouse
Cabela’s
Backcountry.com
Publiclands.com
Campmor.com

“My ARR river trip will be the first of many. I need complete technical outfitting.”

Northwest River Supply (NRS)
Watersports Outlet
Cascade River Gear

Used Gear

While it may be hard to find specific sizes, you can check out used gear options. Thrift stores often have hidden gems for very low prices, so it’s always worth a look. If you live close to an REI store, visit them and see about their Garage Sales. Each store operates differently when it occurs, but Garage Sales are known for deep discounts on returned or used items. REI also has an online USED GEAR SHOP that may have what you’re looking for.

This is not an exhaustive list, just something to point you in the right direction. Be sure to check with your local, independent outdoor retailer as well. Many brands offer direct sales. If you see something you like but the retailer is out of stock, search for it on the brand’s website. And don’t hesitate to reach out to us with any questions; we’re here to help!

No question too small!
