What it is Really Like to Raft Grand Canyon with Your Family

By Amanda Wiesner • November 3, 2025

For years, I’ve had the privilege of helping guests prepare for their Arizona River Runners rafting adventures by answering questions, easing last-minute packing stress, and watching as the canyon leaves a lasting mark on every traveler.

Each summer, I’m fortunate to step away from the office and join a river trip. It’s more than just a perk of the job; it’s a powerful reminder of why I love what I do.

This past season, I had the unforgettable opportunity to bring my entire family, my husband, and our two daughters, ages 10 and 11, on a 7 Day Motor rafting trip.

Even with all my years of experience and deep appreciation for this place, I wasn’t prepared for how profoundly different it would feel to experience the canyon through their eyes.

From day one, my girls quickly adapted to the rhythm of early mornings, sandy camp setups, and sleeping under the stars. In no time, they were comfortable and confident in this wild, breathtaking environment.

But as anyone who’s rafted the Colorado River knows, life in the canyon is all about contrast. One minute you’re soaking up the sun on a quiet beach, and the next you’re soaked and shivering after blasting through a 50-degree rapid.

As we approached some of the bigger rapids and steep, cliffside hikes, I found myself doing what many parents do – scanning the guides’ faces for reassurance. But my daughters surprised me. They didn’t hesitate; they charged ahead, full of fearless curiosity and determination.

That’s what impacted me most. They weren’t just along for the ride; they were truly living the adventure. Fully present. Fully engaged. And reminding me of what these trips are really all about.

That mix of challenge, awe, and personal growth is what makes a Grand Canyon family rafting trip so transformative. Watching my daughters overcome fears, push their limits, and come out stronger was the highlight of our journey.

If you’re considering rafting the Grand Canyon with kids, just know they might walk away with more than just memories. They might surprise you. They might even inspire you.

No question too small!
